The Antonie Trophy has its roots in a Seniors Day meeting held in September 2009, when representatives from the four “Norwood” clubs — Lenzie (Bob Cole), Kirkintilloch (Alex Gillespie), Westermains (Matt McShane), and Woodilee (Bob Barbour) — came together to discuss a new idea. It was Bob Cole who first proposed creating a special tournament for the senior members, something that would bring the clubs together in a friendly but competitive spirit.
His idea was a Top Nine match, played across six rinks and made up of pairs, triples, and fours. The other three clubs quickly agreed to the format, recognising the thought and effort Bob had put into shaping a competition that everyone could enjoy.
A hosting cycle was set: Lenzie would lead the way in 2010, followed by Woodilee in 2011 — marking their centenary year — then Westermains in 2012 and Kirkintilloch in 2013. The plan was for the tournament to continue on a six‑year rotation, always played in August, giving each club its turn to welcome the others.
The Antonine Trophy was very much Bob Cole’s creation, and his hard work in bringing the idea to life deserves to be remembered. Fittingly, Lenzie were the inaugural hosts in 2010, setting the tone for a competition built on camaraderie, tradition, and a shared love of the game.
